SDA vs SIL: What Is the Difference and Can You Receive Both?

Finding the right place to live is one decision. Working out what support you need inside that home is another.

This is where SDA vs SIL can become confusing. Both relate to living more independently, but they pay for very different things.

The simplest way to remember the difference is this: SDA is about the home. SIL is about the support delivered inside it.

What Is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

Specialist Disability Accommodation, or SDA, is housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.

An SDA home may include features that make movement, personal care and daily routines safer. Depending on the property, these may include:

  • Wider doorways and accessible bathrooms
  • Reinforced ceilings for ceiling hoists
  • Automated doors, lighting or blinds
  • Accessible kitchens and living spaces
  • Emergency communication systems
  • Durable materials suited to individual needs

SDA does not pay for support workers or everyday living costs. It funds the specialist features and physical property.

The NDIS recognises four SDA design categories:

  • Improved Liveability
  • Fully Accessible
  • High Physical Support
  • Robust

Not every participant needs SDA. The NDIS considers whether specialised housing is necessary because of the person's disability-related support needs. You can read the official NDIS guidance on Specialist Disability Accommodation to learn more about how SDA works.

What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living, known as SIL, funds help or supervision from support workers within the participant's home.

This may include support with:

  • Showering, dressing and personal care
  • Cooking and eating meals
  • Cleaning and other household tasks
  • Following daily routines
  • Building practical living skills
  • Overnight assistance and supervision

SIL is generally intended for participants with higher support needs who require significant help throughout the day. A participant may live alone or share a home and some supports with other people.

Unlike SDA, SIL does not fund the building, rent, groceries or utility bills. It pays for eligible support delivered in the home.

For a closer look at daily support, read our guide to Supported Independent Living.

Thinking about SDA vs SIL as two separate layers can make the difference clearer. The house is one layer. The help provided inside it is another.

Can You Receive Both SDA and SIL?

Yes, some eligible participants may have both SDA and SIL funded in their NDIS plan.

For example, a person may need an accessible home with automated doors and ceiling hoist provisions. That need may relate to SDA. They may also require support workers to assist with personal care, meals and daily routines. That support may be funded through SIL.

However, receiving one does not automatically make a participant eligible for the other. The NDIS assesses SDA and SIL separately against the participant's needs, goals and funding criteria.

A participant may also:

  • Receive SIL without living in an SDA property
  • Live in SDA without receiving SIL
  • Use other home and living supports instead of either option

The right arrangement depends on the individual, not simply the name of the accommodation.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Home

A suitable property should support more than physical access. It should also fit the participant's routines, preferences and future goals.

Before choosing a home or provider, consider asking:

  • Is SDA, SIL or both included in my NDIS plan?
  • Does the property meet my accessibility needs?
  • Can I choose who provides my daily support?
  • Will I live alone or with housemates?
  • How are shared support hours arranged?
  • What rent and household costs will I need to pay?
  • How will my support plan be reviewed?
  • What happens if my needs change?

Take time with these questions. A home should feel safe and comfortable, while the support around it should respect the participant's choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SDA the same as SIL?

Do I need SDA to receive SIL?

No. A participant may receive SIL in other suitable housing if it meets their needs and SIL is included in their plan.

Can my SDA and SIL providers be different?

Yes. SDA housing and SIL support are separate services. Participants can generally exercise choice over their providers, subject to their plan, service arrangements and available options.
